Comcast is bringing a bit of 'home improvement' to the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona. April 21 will be the 11th annual Comcast Cares Day, when thousands of employees and family and friends get together to make a positive impact on neighborhoods across the country. This event has been around since 2001 and is now considered one of the largest single day volunteer efforts in the U.S. Last year alone nearly 70,000 volunteers from Comcast participated in nearly 659 projects across 39 states and the Washington D.C. area.
This year over 150 Comcast employees and their families will get together to improve on the Girl Scouts Hacienda facility. The volunteers will be painting, landscaping, and constructing a new volleyball court and much more this weekend. The Girl Scouts use the Hacienda facility for their day camps, special events and it also serves as an in-town environmental education and program center. The community is welcome to use the Hacienda as well for conferences, corporate retreats, company picnics and festive get-togethers. The public is also invited to join the crew for a day of community service. T-shirts, food and beverages will be provided by Comcast, for those who are joining the effort.
The weekend spring cleaning has double meaning for the Girl Scouts, not only does their facility get a good sprucing up, but also how community service works. This weekend is also Global Youth Service Day and Earth Day.
"The timing of this is just perfect and illustrates the circle of giving," notes Kristen Culliney, Girl Scouts Chief Operating Officer. "Comcast Cares Day will result in an improved facility and the ability to better serve girls and our community. It will also allow girls to see sustainability in action, to make tangible contributions to their community and to draw inspiration from the work of those they meet on this day!"
“We are proud to be committed to improving the quality of life in the local communities where our customers and employees live and work,” said Alan Price, General Manager/Director of Operations for Comcast Tucson. Comcast Cares Day is a great way for our employees to get their hands dirty for a great cause, and help out non-profits like the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona.
“Growing up as a Girl Scout helped me learn so many valuable leadership skills and helped shape me into the person I am today,” said Kelle Maslyn, Corporate Affairs Manager for Comcast Tucson. “Giving back to an organization that helps so many girls become powerful leaders and to work side-by-side with these of the future leaders is fantastic.
