National Mayor’s challenge for water conservation kicks off | Environment
Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Tucson Water are actively encouraging residents to ‘pledge for water’ in the National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation.
Tucson residents can make their online pledges at www.mywaterpledge.com from now through April 30. Participants in cities with the highest number of pledges are eligible for prizes donated by Wyland and several other organizations. Pledges are tallied by area zip codes, not official city limits.
“Last year, Tucson exceeded expectations by coming in sixth in the country," said Mayor Rothschild, in a recent news release about the program. "I know that this year, we can do even better. Saving water is something we all need to do, and here's an opportunity to learn, to conserve and to win prizes.”
“April is also Water Awareness Month,” said Fernando Molina, Tucson Water Public Information Officer, also from a news release. “Tucson Water will be promoting the challenge in conjunction with several other events we are participating in.”
The Wyland Foundation sponsors the National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation. It is a friendly online competition between cities, now in its fourth year. Through Wyland, Mayor Rothschild has also joined other mayors across the country pledging to inspire their residents to save water and energy.
Tucson Water’s www.tucsonaz.gov/water/take-the-pledge offers resources for residents that they can share to increase the number of local pledges during the competition. The page will be updated throughout April and linked to Wyland’s national page which tracks cities’ rankings as pledges are tallied.
