Latest addition to the Reid Park Zoo is displaying his stripes today | Events
Reid Park Zoo visitors will get to see a special site today, as the zoo welcomes its latest addition to the family. A Grevy’s Zebra, born on August 31, will be on exhibit today with his mother.
The baby zebra was born with a low birth weight and has spent several days behind the scenes, but he is now nursing and according to zoo officials is gaining weight.
Zoo staff and veterinarians will be keeping a close eye on this little guy, as he is part of an endangered species. There are only 2,500 Grevy’s zebra remaining in the wild. Reid Park Zoo is a partner in the Species Survival Plan and is working with other zoos across the nation on preserving endangered and threatened species.
The zoo’s little Grevy will be on exhibit today for an undetermined amount of time, and he may return behind the scenes this afternoon, for a little more rest.
If you are interested in seeing this little guy, or would like to see the rest of the animals at the zoo – their hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. For additional information you can call 791-4022 or visit the zoo’s website at www.tucsonzoo.org.
