D-M: 80 reports of sonic boom damage so far | News

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Davis-Monthan officials say they have received 80 reports of damage from Friday's sonic boom. But, no claims have been filed so far.

A large number of Tucson residents reported hearing a loud boom Friday. Officials at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, where the Thunderbirds are practicing for last weekend's air show, originally said it was not a sonic boom.

However, D-M now says after further investigation, a sonic boom did occur.

The Air Force Thunderbirds were practicing for the Thunder and Lightning Over Arizona air show when one of the demonstrations broke the sound barrier around 2:45 p.m. Officials said, "It is uncommon for aircraft to break the sound barrier during a performance and is restricted over populated areas."

Tucson Police said the areas affected were those all along East Pima Road, areas near East Fort Lowell Road and North Dodge Boulevard, and along North Wilmot Road, between Grant and Pima.
